Economy / AXIS 03

Collective vs. Individual

How much power should workers exercise together in the workplace? Who has a voice at work?

ONE END OF THE AXIS

Collective

You favor collective bargaining, worker representation, and shared influence over workplace decisions. You see an individual employee as having less bargaining power than an employer and value institutions that address that imbalance.

THE OTHER END

Individual

You favor individual contracts and management discretion. You place more weight on an employee’s ability to negotiate or change jobs and an owner’s ability to direct a business.

The nuance matters

A preference for worker voice does not require opposition to entrepreneurship. A preference for individual negotiation does not imply indifference to workplace safety. This dimension examines how decisions and bargaining power are shared.

These are preferences along a scale, not fixed categories. You can have a clear leaning while making exceptions for a particular policy, institution, or situation.

A tradeoff to think about

Should large companies reserve some board seats for representatives elected by their workers, even when shareholders would prefer otherwise?

Think about the consequences you expect and which values you would prioritize. The purpose is to make your reasoning clearer.

How this axis is scored

The quick test includes four statements on this axis; the full test includes eight. Half point toward collective when you agree, and half toward individual. Strong answers count twice as much as moderate answers. Neutral counts as zero, while skipped statements are excluded.

A score near 50% can reflect neutral answers or opposing answers that average out. With no answered statements, the axis is shown as unmeasured. Read the formula and limitations.

The actual test statements

The first four appear in both versions. The last four add more context in the full test. There are no hidden questions or undisclosed weights.
